QUARRY PROPOSAL UPDATE

11 May 2020

We do hope this update finds you, your family and loved ones healthy and well at this difficult time.

Ryarsh Protection Group (RPG) wish to share the latest update on the next stage of the process regarding Kent County Council Minerals Sites Plan – the Public Inspector has delivered his report. We are pleased to confirm the Inspector broadly supports the Plan put forward by Kent County Council (KCC) which EXCLUDES the M8 Ryarsh, West Malling Site. The next stage of the process is for the minor modifications requested by the Inspector and the Plan itself to be submitted for acceptance by KCC, timing for this is estimated October 2020 onwards due to Covid-19.

Be assured the RPG will continue to monitor proceedings closely over the coming months. We are in this for the long haul, for and on behalf of the community and will do everything possible to ‘save green space’ which has become even more valuable to all of us over the past few weeks since lockdown commenced.

Our village and the surrounding communities have resolutely rejected all attempts to extract minerals from the M8 site and the RPG will continue to uphold those views and any attempts to circumvent the current status - we know we can rely on the collective spirit of our residents and supporters as we move forward.

Everyone in the area is exceptionally proud of this wonderful and thriving community and together we will protect it for future generations.

COVID-19

Together, we’re facing a truly unprecedented situation. Our hearts go out to everyone who's been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. We wish all our residents, supporters, and their loved ones well at this challenging time. There are many local community groups and WhatsApp groups already helping, but if anyone needs anything, we can help spread the word. If you feel we can assist in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

BENEFITS OF NATURE

“Having more green space (parks, trees, forests, gardens and fields) in your local environment is linked with better overall health”

Dr Rangan Chatterjee, Feel Better In 5

It’s wonderful to see a growing number of residents using the local footpaths for their daily exercise, and being able to enjoy the wonderful countryside.

Top tip - April 2020

Currently we recommend taking a walk to see The Roughetts ancient woodland and the beautiful bluebells out in bloom there. It won’t be long before they are dormant again so see them while you can! Please remember that bluebells are a protected species so please don’t pick them.

Of course, please do remember to follow government guidance and continue to adhere to social distancing rules.

Share your photos

Our aim is to shine a bright light on our beautiful countryside and community at this time of the year, especially to help those who cannot venture outdoors in the present circumstances. Also, to remember the very many people in flats or accommodation without access to gardens, we’d love it if you can share your photos. Whether they're from your daily exercise, something you've snapped on a walk, cycle or a run, or a view from your home. You can share your photos with us on our Facebook or Twitter, or tag us in your photos on Instagram!

Stay healthy, stay safe and stay positive.

AMANDA, WEST MALLING

Have not lived in the area long, but am very concerned about the expansion of the quarry as well as other proposals around the West Malling area. Glad to support.

PAUL, RYARSH

I much appreciate the effort put in by the group to mobilise support and would like to make a small contribution towards the costs.

LEYBOURNE CHASE RESIDENT

Thank you for everything you are doing, if you hadn’t told us about this, we would never have known about the proposed quarry.

ANONYMOUS SUPPORTER

Appreciate all the hard work you are doing to preserve the beautiful countryside around our villages.
