Ryarsh Sand Quarry - What’s being proposed by Kent County Council?

On the 19th December 2017, some residents received a generic letter informing them of a site proposal nearby. The letter is available to see here. This nearby site turned out to be a proposal for a very large sand quarry on 'Roughetts Road' in Ryarsh.

Below is the map in the KCC document, detailing the proposed site that would bring a heavy burden on our area and the people that live in this community. This will also impact those living in the surrounding areas including but not limited to; Addington, Birling, Leybourne Chase and everybody that uses the London Road A20.

In the proposal shown above details the following:

  • Extraction of 3.1 million tonnes of soft sand

  • Extraction of 0.5 million tonnes of silica sand

  • 24 years of extraction

  • A further 5 years to restore to original state

  • Access to site via A20 London Road to the south

  • Exit from site via 'Roughetts Road’ to the east

The full document can be seen here on KCC's planning portal. This site is referred to as “Site M8” and “West Malling Sandpit”.
